Nicola Smithers

Nicola Smithers is the Lead Specialist for the Capacity Development and Results practice (WBICR) at the World Bank Institute (WBI). WBICR provides advisory services, knowledge products, research, and knowledge sharing that inform and support the design and management of results-focused capacity development strategies, policies, and programs.
A UK national, Ms. Smithers has a varied and rich experience in development that includes operations and global programs in the areas of governance, capacity development, and public financial management (PFM). She has worked for the World Bank as a task team leader for operations in the Africa region, as a consultant, and as the head of the multi-donor Public Expenditure and Financial Accountability (PEFA) program, leading the development of the internationally adopted PEFA performance measurement framework (PFM).
She previously worked as a governance adviser for DFID in East Africa, a consultant for Oxford Policy Management, and ODI Fellow for the Government of Fiji.
Ms. Smithers holds a masters degree in development economics and is a UK chartered accountant.
