WBI Global Dialogues on Climate Change: Scaling up Mitigation Actions in Cities

Cities are a major source of carbon emissions. But they are also commercial and technological hubs that can drive a low carbon economy. This dialogue will showcase best practices of cities in scaling up mitigation actions and creating low or even zero carbon cities.

Topics will include:

  • Cities' contribution to carbon emissions and climate change.
  • Cities' role in transition to a low carbon economy, and the policy and regulatory tools available to cities in this regard.
  • Experiences with scaling up renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives within cities.
  • Finance and investment issues in mitigation actions by cities, including carbon market mechanisms.
  • Public transport investments and urban density.
  • Role of leadership in driving urban agendas.

  

This session is part of the Global Dialogue Series on Climate Change: "The Road to Durban".  It brings together a number of high-level city officials and international experts via video conference to share experiences and discuss common approaches in scaling up mitigation actions in cities.

The dialogues are structured around key themes that will be discussed during the upcoming United Nations Climate Conference (COP17) in Durban in November 2011. 

Each session is facilitated to ensure that the intended objectives are achieved, and that there is sufficient discussion and participation. In order to structure the discussions, increase interaction, and make optimal use of time, a framework for questions to be discussed during each session will be prepared in advance based on consultations with key stakeholders.

Each session will start with an introductory presentation from a recognized international expert who will provide an overview of recent research and debates and provide a background of the key issues regarding the topic of the session. The participants from South Africa, as hosts of COP17, will act as opening discussants, and raise relevant topics for debate, which will be followed by a plenary discussion.

Participation will be expanded beyond those directly involved in the dialogues via a live webcast during which web audiences can send in questions. Discussion summaries will be made available for wider distribution.
