Jeff Thindwa at Voice of America: Strong Media Essential for Accountable Governments

This news program of May 2, 2014 by “Voice of America” TV is dedicated to World Press Freedom Day, and discusses media’s importance for development. Among other experts, the program featured Jeff Thindwa, Manager of the World Bank Institute’s (WBI) Social Accountability practice, who shared insights on WBI’s Global Media Development Program. It is a capacity development program that trains media professionals and civic leaders on how to access public spending data and how to interpret and demystify it. There are examples in many countries of how the media has contributed to improved transparency, public engagement and government oversight.
 
The Global Media Development Program is part of WB’s Open Budgeting umbrella program, which aims to work with all stakeholders around the budget cycle to make public budgets more open, inclusive, and responsive to citizens.
